Feeling the threat of a pandemic? Keep calm and practice Yoga

Writer's picture: Eglė TamašauskaitėEglė Tamašauskaitė

In the last few days, we can see so much fear, panic and words CORONA VIRUS everywhere. It looks like all the world is scared of a pandemic. It's time to stay calm and do the best we can do at the moment to go through this difficult time for the world.

“It’s all about keeping stress levels low and your immune system healthy,” says Larissa Hall Carlson an Ayurvedic Specialist.

I am sitting now in my balcony and enjoying my coffee with turmeric (why with turmeric you can read down below). The sun is glowing to my face and I am admiring my view of mountains and Nature waking up for Spring. I am sitting here in the present moment, feeling relaxed and calm. The best and easiest Meditation ever. Just sitting and breathing the fresh air and letting myself fill with golden positive energy from Nature.

I am sitting here for a while... I let myself sink to my own safe and comfortable energy bubble. This is my personal daily ritual which helps me get stronger emotionally and keeps me healthy mentally. I am not letting the mind game win over and get to panic. Nature is not panicking... chickens who walk around my garden don’t look panicked too. The life here goes the same pace how it was before. Maybe because my life a long time ago stopped being incredibly busy, there is no more endless running trying to do everything. Years ago I started living a slow and calm life. Probably now when everything is stoping in the world and people getting isolated at home, panic is all over the place, but I don’t really feel it because my life didn’t really change, it is the same calm and slow as before.

My balcony view

Being honest, some hours ago when I opened Social Media, I felt totally different, not like now sitting in the balcony... It felt the scary place to be in this world, I mean scary even to be a human being. All the news just about the same topic and it makes people panic and feel unsafe. There is so much information out there that it is difficult to understand what is true what is not. More you watch the news or read about it more your mind makes you worry.

In my opinion, panic will not help in this case, keeping calm, and be ready for anything in your life this is how it looks in a healthy mind. We can not know what will happen, but at least without panic, we can stay calm and be aware of how we can protect ourselves and the people around us.

I want to share with you a few tips as a Yoga teacher what you can do to keep yourself healthy mentally, emotionally and physically. Keep your life in balance.

  • We all know how important the Immune system is to fight against all kinds of viruses. To increase your immunity we need to be okay not just in your body but emotionally and mentally too. Stress will make more weak your immune system. This time balance in your life is really needed. Boosting immunity is not just about taking vitamins, it should be balance with body and mind. How you can boost your immune system:

  • Keep your diet healthy and nutrient, adding more fresh fruits and vegetables. The most recommended food to keep a strong immune system: blueberries, citrus fruits (lemon, orange, grapefruit, lime), broccoli, spinach, almonds, ginger, turmeric, and garlic.

  • I want to share a little bit more about Turmeric, a lot of people use this yellow spice just for cooking but it can be used almost everywhere and is really good to improve your immune system. I personally put a small spoon of turmeric almost everywhere I can. For example, I drink my coffee with turmeric or put some in my porridge, pancakes, even making a face mask or tea. I am so in love with this spice that I could write a lot about it (maybe one of my posts will be about just turmeric if you interested let me know).

Turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence. Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.

I am drinking every day "Golden tea", this kind of tea will keep you healthy and strong immunity, and it's easy to make it.

Turmeric Tea Recipe:

Preparation: Mix all species together in a cup and pour boiled water ( not straight away after boiling, wait for few mins to cool down, not to lose all benefit from species) you can also use milk instead of water ( almond or coconut milk if you don't use regular milk).

  • Drink plenty of water and other natural fluids. Don't use ice, best to avoid very cold drinks, keep it room temperature or drink warm water with lemon and mint or other species you prefer.

  • Gurgle warm salt water, to prevent catching flu or virus, salt clears germs and bacteria from the throat.

  • Getting good rest and at least 8 hours of sleep. Good night sleep is really important for your body to recharge and restore. Try to go to sleep and wake at the same time every day.

  • Open your windows regularly for fresh air in your home.

Sage smudging
  • Burning sage — also known as smudging — is an ancient spiritual ritual. Sage has antimicrobial properties, sage smudging also known for keeping infectious bacteria, viruses, and fungi away. It also helps to cleanse your personal space from negative energy and improve your mood.

  • Regular exercise is needed not just keep your body strong, slim and beautiful but to keep your heart, lungs, and circulatory system healthy and improve your Immune system.

  • Practicing right way handwashing (but I think this part we all know already and heard at least 100 times, I don't think I will repeat how to wash your hands one more time) and oral hygiene is important too, helps to keep viruses away.

  • Now is a good time to start practicing more Namaste. In Yoga practice, we greet and Thank with palms together - Namaste gesture. It's a way to avoid bacteria and germs. Instead of handshaking, you can say hello in a different way, still, be polite and no bacterial transfer.

  • Avoiding stress is an important factor for your immune system but also for your mental health. I will recommend after reading this blog post, close your TV and all Social Media for some time. It's enough scrolling, time to rest for you from all this stressful news and not letting panic to win in your head.

Turn off and have some rest
  • Instead of spending hours and hours checking your Facebook or watching all different news with the same scary message, start practicing Meditation. It can be the key to keep yourself relaxed, healthy mentally and emotionally. If you find it is difficult to meditate alone you can open Guided Meditation and follow the guidance. Down below you can listen to my Guided Yoga Nidra, it is deep relaxation Meditation, which also can help for better sleep. Or you can simply choose a comfortable position and keep focusing on your breath. Breathing helps to calm down and keep your mind more empty from worries and distractive thoughts.

  • Regular Yoga practice will help keep your body and mind in balance. If you are avoiding public places and keeping yourself more isolated to protect yourself, you still can practice on your own or watch online videos. There are no excuses, look after yourself and do it. Life brought us to the point now when we have to stop running and being busy and finally take care of ourselves. Yoga is self-care and self-love practice.

  • The last tip, if you have a chance, get out to Nature. Probably anyway it will not be so many people nowadays out there in the forest or mountains. Nature is a healing place, it helps to keep your immune system, mental and emotional health in balance. If you are lucky and the sun is shining, spend more time and get all Vitamin D you can. Walk into Nature and enjoy the fresh air with a positive attitude. Everything will be alright.
